Reporting to the Fire Prevention Officer under the direction of the Fire Chief, the successful applicant will enforce the Ontario Fire Code and the Town’s fire prevention by-laws; conduct comprehensive fire prevention inspections of all classes of buildings and occupancies, report the findings to the appropriate authorities and make recommendations to improve building and occupancy fire safety; examine and approve fire safety plans, drawings and specifications of site plans  for buildings to be erected, modified or demolished; deal with the public in a tactful and intelligent manner while demonstrating resourcefulness and sound judgement, plan and conduct training sessions, seminars and public education presentations for both small and large groups of people; relay public information and safety messages through the media; be an assistant to the Fire Marshal under the provisions of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, assist in fire cause determination, working in all types of weather and at times, in less than ideal environmental circumstances.

 
The successful applicant must be willing to obtain certification as a Fire Prevention Officer, and be willing to enroll and successfully complete the Ontario Fire College’s Fire Prevention Officer Curriculum.  The successful applicant will require a knowledge of modern firefighting, prevention and training methods, health and safety regulations, Town by-laws and provincial statutes related to fire safety and fire prevention, NFPA regulations, and the principles, techniques, codes, accepted practices and materials used for building construction.
 
The successful candidate shall possess:
·          At least ten years of service with a Fire Department, including at least three years designated to Fire Prevention duties
·          Post-secondary certificate or diploma in Fire Prevention Technology or a related discipline. Preference will be given to candidates who possess all the pertinent certification.
·          A DZ license in good standing.
·          Superior communication, presentation and report writing skills.
·          A commitment to the values of professionalism, efficiency, empathy, sensitivity, cooperation and teamwork.
·          The ability to create and deliver programs throughout the community and identify target audiences for those program
·          From time to time the applicant may be used at scenes and will be required to be able to perform structural firefighting duties
 
As per the Collingwood Professional Fire Fighters collective agreement, the Fire Prevention Inspector Probationary rate is 102% of a first class firefighter and after successful completion is 108%. Wage rates in effect as of December, 31, 2008.
